HISTORY
Sotogrande was created by the couple, Joseph McMicking and Mercedes Zóbel from the Philippines along with the support of their two nephews, Jaime and Enrique Zóbel. The idea was to build a Palm Beach in southern Europe.
In 1962, the McMickings, bought five neighbouring farms with the idea of creating a luxurious residential development by the Mediterranean. Over the years, the couple built what is considered one of the most luxurious urbanizations in Europe. In May 2006 Sotogrande was featured in The Times as the area home to the most expensive real estate in Europe. There are a number of artificial lakes and five golf courses, including the all famous Valderrama Golf Club, created by Jaime Ortiz-Patiñoand the San Roque course. The colourful, luxurious leisure port was completed in 1988.
ARCHITECTURAL PARADISE
Sotogrande is well known as an architectural paradise for lovers of architecture, boasting luxury in an array of different styles and wonderful caches, influenced by a mix of traditional Andalusian art, 21st century design and a stylish Moorish touch. Wherever you look, be it the spectacular nature of the area or its phenomenal architecture, views are breath-taking. In 2008 the local government declared three buildings of cultural interest, protecting them from reform or demolition. These architectural gems are the Biddle House, by Francisco Javier Carvajal, the Zóbel house by José Antonio Coderch and the Real Club de Golf designed by Luis Gutierrez Soto.
