District: San Pedro Beachside – El Ingenio

SAN PEDRO BEACHSIDE – EL INGENIO

El Ingenio is one of the oldest districts in San Pedro de Alcantara. It is located south of the A7 highway, on the beachside of San Pedro east end of the new Boulevard and opposite the shopping centre La Colonia.

El Ingenio has some history behind it and monuments to remind us of its history. One of these is the old church-like yellow building called El Ingenio on Calle La Morena. This building was a sugar cane factory for the San Pedro estate, built in 1871. This factory also housed a bodega that produced a delicious Muscatel (a local sweet wine) that was locally known as La Alcholera. Today it is the cultural centre of El Ingenio.

The area is mostly inhabited by locals, with a mixture of charming villas and apartment buildings. It does not reach the seafront, as south of El Ingenio lies the district of Linda Vista. Yet it is still within walking distance to the beach.

El Ingenio is also home to a restaurant called Restaurante 1870, located in an old building from the 1870s. Back in the day, it was the old grain store for El Ingenio. Today it is a listed building, painted a gaudy blue and white. The restaurant is well worth visiting not only to admire the beautiful architecture from the inside but also to enjoy some delicious, traditional Andalucian cuisine in a spectacular atmosphere.
