Europe’s love affair with the Costa del Sol, began in the 1950s, when celebrities flocked to Torremolinos, including Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Marlon Brando, Orson Welles and Frank Sinatra. Torremolinos set the stage for the glitz and glamour of the Costa del Sol. The municipality strived over the years, with the wealth of famous visitors, and became the place to be and the place to be seen. It quickly became the prestige landmark of southern Europe and paved the way to further development across the Costa del Sol, and its tourist frenzy. The liberal and cosmopolitan makeup of the town continues today, where drag queens host talent shows.

In 1959, the first luxury hotel in the Costa del Sol, the Art Deco-styled Pez Espada, opened its doors in Torremolinos. In the following years, new hotels, nightclubs and other tourist-aimed establishments changed the face of the town and its beaches. By 1965, Torremolinos was established as a major tourist destination. Today, Torremolinos is particularly popular with the British, Irish and Scandinavian tourist and has got a significant British expatriate population.

Areas of the town are spotted with older high-rise residential buildings and hotels. A significant number of original old town properties remain as a testament of its origins, unlike other popular resorts such as Benidorm and Fuengirola. Torremolinos also enjoys one of the best climates in Europe. It has long, dry summers and mild winters with occasional, heavy rainfall. The town also benefits from a cool sea breeze in the summertime.

Torremolinos has got a beautiful beach line along the Mediterranean, extending 8 kilometres west of Málaga capital, with a fully illuminated promenade. The seaside resort boasts a wealth of “chiringuitos” (beach bars), all along its 8 kilometres coastline. The east end of the beach strip, known as Los Alamos, has live dance music and events throughout the summer. It is also a favourite for kite surfing and windsurfing.

In addition to its tourism sector, Torremolinos is known locally for its vibrant and liberal nightlife, particularly its numerous bars and clubs catering to the LGBT community. Consequently, Torremolinos co-hosted World Pride in 2017 in conjunction with Madrid and holds its own Pride festival in June, now the third-largest in Spain. Also, Torremolinos hosts MadBear, Delice Dream, Wonder Beach and various other LGTB festivals throughout the summer.
