Behind the theatre are the high ancient walls of the two fortresses, the Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro. The Alcazaba was built in the 11th century. It was the palace-fortress of one of the Muslim rulers of the city at the time. The Gibralfaro was built in the 14th century.
Plaza de la Merced, also known as Picasso’s place of birth, is home to an obelisk called Genera Torrijos. During the 15th century, this square was a public market.
