San Pedro Alcántara is a charming seaside town located in the region of Marbella on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain. It is situated in the fertile plain of the same name, Vega de San Pedro Alcántara, a broad stretch of coastal lowland surrounded in a semicircle by rugged hills. On the East side of the town lies Sierra Blanca, dominated by its highest peak, Pico del Astonar, known as La Concha (the shell) because of its shape that resembles a shell. To the North, lies Sierra del Real, Sierra de las Nieves and Sierra de Tolox. To the west of San Pedro is Monte Mayor and Sierra Bermeja. South lies the majestic Mediterranean Sea in all its glory.
In the heart of San Pedro de Alcántara are two industrial buildings from the 19th century: the Trapiche de Gaudaiza and an old sugar mill, which has now been transformed into the Ingenio Cultural Centre. San Pedro’s 19th century heritage is also reflected by two colonial style buildings: the parish Church and the Villa San Luis, the original residence of Marqués del Duero. San Pedro is also home to some of the most important archaeological sites in the Marbella municiplaity: the early Christian Basílica de Vega del Mar, the Roman baths of Las Bóvedas (the Domes) and Torre de Las Bovedas (watch tower).
San Pedro still retains its typical white-washed village style, one of the rare exceptions left on the Costa del Sol. The centre is decorated with beautiful gardens and squares surrounded by lovely bars, cafés and restaurants bustling with a vibrant culture of a mix of locals and foreigners who have chosen this charming town to call home.
South of its nucleus lies Nueva Alcántara (the new part) with a newly constructed promenade and the long, wide beaches, where there are many new luxury developments with spectacular views to the sea.
